What exercises relax the back? |

My back is quite stiff and this makes it difficult to practice for more than 45 minutes at a time. I am probably over training by doing aerobic exercise about
more than four times a week. Secondly my doctors are giving me statins which can cause back discomfort.

Seriously, statins can cause all kinds of side effects, which is why I stopped them last year after about 2 years on them. My cholesterol is not really bad
without them (168 total, last month).
But the side effects reduced within a day or two: painful left knee (had to take stairs one at a time), painful left thumb/index finger joint --- and most surprising of all -- suddenly improved hearing. I'm not trying to play anti-doctor, and I would go back on statins tonight if I really had a related diagnosis, but the quality of my total life means more to me than my "Kaiser score." Anyway, 45 minutes of steady cello playing ain't so bad. And then there are ways of adusting your chair or stool to ease the stress on your back. Good luck! Andy |

I have found swimming to be one of the best exercises as it both increases flexibility and strength simultaneously. While a good swim, (i.e. doing laps) is
exhausting, I have never injured myself.
Also, I've read Janos Starker is a swimmer. |

Swimming isn't always the answer- infact, it sadly makes my back a lot worse (disc issues). There's no one answer- it totally depends on what's
causing your stiffness. I would see a good physiotherapist and get their recommendations.

Feldenkrais method | #6 | ||

The Feldenkrais method is fantastic for teaching us how to release unwanted tension. It's all about using the body optimally with grace and ease. I'm
not sure what the statins do but if the question is how to release stiffness, I wholeheartedly recommend Feldenkrais. I've been doing it for about a year
now. One cool thing is that when I leave a session I feel so deeply relaxed that it's better than the best massage! But the principles apply in everything
we do - sitting, standing, swimming, cello playing, walking, you name it.

I had a lot of back pain too with cello can piano, and I was lucky to find a good osteopathically trained physical therapist who helped me tremendously, in
music and otherwise. They are not easy to find... I went to countless other speicalists before finding this one.

Since different solutions will work better for different people, I'm going to toss in Alexander Technique classes. If you can find a teacher in your area,
it's definitely worth investigating.

...as a younger man, and while I wasn't staying in very good shape, I started getting sore/tired back, I think just from sitting up practicing a fair
amount. I bought some weights and started lifting. The issue was resolved in less than a month.

When I was thirty-five I did hard Japanese Karate and then my back never hurt. And when you say yoga you can mean head to knee pose, or bow
pose or even the bridge but the plow is a NO NO for most of us. Anywho I have been doing crunches, oblique crunches and I have a ma roller. If I have a
problem again I will go to the accupuncturist who starts out with shitsu. He is an old man (older than me ) and he walks on my spine. Today I practiced
without tiring.
