My dear sweet Dad passed away in late September. It was sudden--the doc thinks he might have had swine flu, which can act very quickly. He would have been
100 in December, and was still healthy and mentally active. He was a a clinical psychologist, then chairman of the psyche department at Western Connecticut
State College. Music was always part of his life, flute, then cello. He started cello lessons at around age 50 and played into his 90's, when he gave his
cello to me. He played in the Danbury Symphony in CT, and the Hendersonville Symphony in NC. I had been up to visit a couple weeks before and we 'did the
bookstores', all his favorite restaurants, Trader Joe's. He loved to cook, California rolls being one of his specialties, and he loved trying new
ethnic restaurants. Every morning he made himself oatmeal, had it with goat's milk, and also ate plenty of apple sauce. Must be something to that! He
tended toward Buddhism, and had been a meditator since the 80's. Instead of a conventional service, we had members of the NMSO play quartets, as Dad's
gift to his retirement community.

Elaine,
Thank you for sharing. It sounds like your father was quite an extraordinary person. It is inspiring to me that he began cello lessons around the same age as I, and continued playing into his 90's. I hope to do the same. My heart goes out to you. I think one of the most difficult aspects of growing older is losing our loved ones, parents, siblings, spouses, etc. Ellen |
