Can anyone tell me how the "soloist" would play any differently from the "regular " string? How about the difference between "soft", "medium" (that everyone seems to use) and "strong". I did finally manage to find the Larsen A/S website but it didn't have much in the way of info on it. ET

Reticent CelloChatter Posts: 1632 Aug 18 09 6:44 PM Active CelloChatter	THe soloists tend to be clearer, more powerful, punchier and a bit brighter than the standards, which are typically darker and smoother sounding. Not sure about the different gauges of Larsen's, I haven't tried them. I think the soloist D is more popular than the regular because it has some more character to it. It can be coupled with a regular or soloist A, it blends well.

I have used both on my cheap cello and have had a hard time noticing the difference. I have noticed the difference between Larson's and Dominant but not between solo and normal Larson's. The Dominant has a darker sound and the Larson's are much brighter which my cello's sound is to bright to start with. I do plan to go with something else. I accidentally over tightened my Larson solo D maybe just one note and it broke at the top. I guess the higher tension you mentioned would make make it more susceptible to this. Bob

Active CelloChatter Posts: 173 Aug 19 09 8:55 AM Active CelloChatter	Last year I was unhappy with my D string sound: it was quiet in comparison to the rest of the strings. I tried quite a few different strings, wasn't unhappy with the regular Larson D (which was a used one I had in stock), so I decided to try the soloist. It was a beautiful string on my cello; it had a much fuller sound and the sound was both loud and smooth and sweet, lots of 'character'. It was a nice match to the Larson A already on the cello and well matched too, to the Belcanto Soloist strings on the G and C. A happy match for my cello.

And for some other strange reason, I jumped straight off the deep end and ordered up the Soloist Strong D and A. What can I say, I'm fond of suspension-bridge-cable strings. So far I'm digging them. They won't make me abandon my trusty Jargars, but I'll definitely keep these Larsens around for when I'm feeling adventuresome.

Bob From what I've experienced, higher quality instruments are generally more sensitive to string choices and set-up. There are exceptions of course, I think I remember Steve Drake mentioning that his excellent modern cello tends to make most strings sound similar.

It sounds a little better but I still have a washed out (weak) F in first position and it still makes an awful squeak when I bow any where except in one place. The humidity is very high here these days due to lots of rain. Do I need a harder rosen during these humid days. I usually use Larsen or Larica Gold 11 by Liebenzeller which worked well a couple of months ago. When the humidity was lower. ET
