On Sunday, June 21, 2009 cellists will gather in the East Meadow of Central Park to create a big, lush sound that will seem
to grow out of the park itself.
We will play a structured improvisation, designed to achieve maximum resonance from the cello's rich natural overtones, taking our cues from ambient, real-time events, such as a sudden gust of wind, a flock of noisy birds, or a passing airplane. In this way we will create beautiful overlapping waves of sound that will enhance, rather than fight with, the sounds of the environment on a summer afternoon in Central Park. Before and after the improvisation, we will play through a few of Colin Hampton's beautiful arrangements of Bach for mass cellos.
If you are a cellist of any age and level of ability, please join us and tell your cello-playing friends to come too! There will be very simple parts for beginners to play, challenging parts for advanced players to play, and in-between parts etc. We will gather earlier in the day to rehearse indoors, then amass in the park at 4 pm. The performance will last roughly from 5-6:30. Afterwards we're all invited to the big Make Music New York party in Central Park!
Please contact James David Jacobs if you're interested in playing or have questions: jdj83061@yahoo.com
This event is part of Mass Appeal, a program of Make Music New York and sponsored by Time Out New York. www.makemusicny.org
