I've played bass in the past so I have that experience on my side, but I believe choosing a cello has been much harder than ever choosing a bass. This weekend I accidently picked up a $30K cello and played it thinking it was in my price range. When I found out it was way out of my price range I gingerly put it down and informed the owner of the shop that I liked the feel and sound of that cello. It was not boomy in sound / very smoooth and felt great. The owner came back and handed me a rudoulf doetsch cello. It sounded great and after some adjustments to the nut it felt great! I did some research about this cello on the interenet and everyone says its a good student cello but nothing for a serious player. The owner and I both agreed it had a $10K sound...(whatever that means), but to my ear....it did. It wasn't too boomy/loud....very smooth. However, I would like to hear an accomplished cello player play it. So does anyone have any input? I know it is each to their own but if I'm going to spend 3-4K on this investment.....I want to feel that I am making the right choice. I've also played several Snow cellos that were nice but not near as nice as the Rudoulf Doetsch cello. Everyone please give me your 2 cents! Active CelloChatter Posts: 194 Feb 23 08 11:24 PM Active CelloChatter	i wonder if cello.org and Tim Janof could possibly have a link on the first page that comes up, something like "TIPS for ASPIRING CELLISTS: RENT FIRST CELLO and GET LESSONS" to convey the point asap, and if the aspiring cellist clicks on the link, then it takes them to a page briefly mentioning the ebay/walmarts <$x cellos, and then links to the 2-3 reputable online luthiers, recommends regular lessons, and tells them it will take a few years of solid practice and lessons to play anything in tune with a listenable tone. with regard to your question, i dont know your financial status, but i suggest saving the $3k and rent while you learn so that you can evaluate an instrument when you know you want to pursue it. if $3k is pocket change for you, by all means. how come you need an accomplished cellist to play, do you not have a teacher? if not, then get one, you will solve 2 otherwise unsolvable problems at once (the other being how to play the cello). Right now I'm teaching myself scales and simple Suz tunes my daughter is learning from her cello teacher. most of which I can play from ear. I currently own a Hofman bass which I am very pleased with. However, the are many more makers of cellos in the American/world market. So, people's experience is what I am looking for...or more importantly Luthier's opinions. I'm not very kean on renting instruments...more so my location doesn't allow this. The other aspect is....I really don't like throwing away money, but even if I could, the instrument would not be available for rent. What do I mean "I would like to hear the cello played by an accomplished player." Well, simply put......I do not know any pieces in the higher register. Thanks. Active CelloChatter Posts: 489 Feb 23 08 11:41 PM Active CelloChatter	I agree with many posters here that renting is a great option for beginners, and that lessons are VERY important, but you're also lucky to have actually found a brand of cellos that are pretty consistent (in my experience), and very solid instruments for a beginner-early intermediate cellist. What you describe fits the sound of Doetsch instruments in general, and they really are one of the more reputable things you could choose in that price range. Does the shop you were at rent cellos? Will they rent the Doetsch to you? Oftentimes it's possible to rent a sort of "step up" level instrument like that for slightly more than what might be the basic rental cost, but as a new cellist it's well worth it in the long run (just in case you end up not liking it, you've saved a lot, and a significant portion of your rental fees should go towards a purchase credit later anyway). Definitely think seriously about taking at least a few lessons to begin with, though, and see if your teacher can help you with a final decision on the instrument if possible. Best of luck! Daniel

However, I do not want to buy a beginer cello......nor do I want to buy an insanely exspensive cello. (oh ya....I am borrowing a cello from my daughter's teacher but it is aweful....although I am very thankful) I want a mature sound and a good feel ...thats it. I KNOW....from playing bass over 15 years....the price tag doesn't designate greatness in sound. Please, no more renting ideas Oh ya....when I bought my bass....I bought it for $950 LOL when it was appraised it was appraised for $11K. LOL I want that kind of deal! J/K not really. It is very easy to play, it responds well, and it generally has a great tone. I haven't been able to find a cello for under 35,000 that I like significantly more than the Doestch. If you can easily afford it I would definitely recommend it. I payed 4,000 for mine.

I've since upgraded a couple of times, but RD is an excellent starting point. You might want to comparison shop online about the price, if you feel like haggling at all. Good luck!

I have seen Doetsch cellos listed for less (about 2,500 I think) but that may have been a different model. I'm not sure how old mine is, the shop thought about 7 years. It's a strad model. I'll try to upload some photos later, I'm off to a concert soon.

To answer your question about choices, you need to shop around. What is available where you live, in your price range. The board has it's favorite on line shops, and they give you a trial period. But you must play an instrument before you buy. Having someone better than you play it helps, but if you are not happy with it you will not play it. I too did the dastardly act of buying first. But like you I have a lot of musical back round, and a pretty good ear. I did do a lot of shopping first, and mine was played for me by one of the shop people. I have been very happy, as has my teacher, whom I found after the purchase. I understand why poeple should rent and advice it. I also lend out instruments for one month. If they do not pick it up in that time, I have saved them a lot of money. I just brought back a guitar from one person and will be sending out a Banjo to another. And my electric bass is in Hawaii with my nephew, who is using it to practice his string bass parts at home. Joe S.

I have played all kinds of Doetsch cellos and some are so-so, most are nice and every now and then there will be an exceptional one. They are made from European tonewoods some have Poplar backs and ribs and are quite plain looking, but produce a wonderfully rich, mellow sound. I bought one for a friend that had a poplar back for a very low price as it was used and needed some work to get playing. It was supposed to be her 'beater cello' for leaving at her summer vacation home. That cello turned out to compare very well with her cellos that cost 5 times the price and she loved playing it. Go figure.... I'd say don't think about what model it is, cellos are all very unique. Play it and listen objectively, forget the label and opinions or comments that are generalized. Student cello or not it can still be a special cello and can still hold its own against cellos that claim to be 'professional models' that may be mediocre for their make. Just my 2 cents.... ~Linda

You have plenty of options in that price range, and if you think the Doetsch cellos are too loud and boomy, try some others out - you will find one that matches your tonal preferences for certain. I'd guess that because you are a bass player you will want more of a warm tone, even on the A string, and Doetsch (as well as many of Bill Lee's cellos) tend toward the preferences of those locales, which is for a boomy lower register and bright and powerful upper. If you want rich and round, keep looking, or try those with poplar backs, which, as mamawelder stated, are warmer. Don't think of this as a quick search - take your time, find what works for you financially and tonally.

I tried and rented a few different cellos around $2000, and finally settled upon a Heinrich Gill 334 that was $4200. The things that drew me, as a bassist, to it are the fact that the neck is a little chunkier than others I tried (which included two different Jay Haides and a few no-name Korean and Chinese instruments...) and the bass response was very punchy and full. I used to find it a bit 'scratchy', but I think it was just the new strings and my amateurishness....
