Steven Isserlis masterclass on Rachmaninov Cello Sonata. He's quite an imposing masterclass teacher (It's far more about him than it is about Guy Johnston of course) and I can imagine being pretty scared of him, but when he plays those first phrases - the sound he produces is just fabulous. I didn't realise quite how posh he was.

Thanks for the links! Wispelwey is pretty eccentric onstage and in this concerto. It's kind of fresh! (I wish he was more sustained in general and at the
ends of some phrases, since some of the notes weren't audible, but w/e)
Isserlis is so straight-forward! Since his musicality is more subtle, I would expect him to act that way, too, but he is pretty fast and demanding. |

Thanks for the links. I was wondering what had happened to Guy Johnston as I have not heard much of him recently. I will never forget the final round of the
BBC young musician of the year a few years back when he took first prize with his electric performance of the Shostakovich 1st concerto......including breaking
a string in the first movement. Amazing performance. He is definately one to watch..................
Cheers Keith. |

I saw him play Elgar recently here in Cambridge - A very good performance as far as I could tell, though in the absolute furthest back seat in Kings college
chapel! He'll be playing the Britten cello Symphony soon I think (I can't remember where). I saw him three years ago playing Dvorak and I really
wasn't impressed - I was sitting in the fifth row and couldn't hear him, so it was pleasantly surprising to see him in such good form in the Elgar. I
wonder when that masterclass video was made?

Looks like Wispelway is putting his new cello to good use. Great performance!
I generally like the Shosty No.1 to have a bit of bite. Yes, it's got to have some "kick" to it... It is not "marshmallow" music, at least for me. rc |

These are both very exciting, I find Isserlis intense every time. His playing and his speaking. I'm always amused when people demand "relax!" and
he even used his bow to direct the relexation. He was very tuned into the cellist's playing and I found his coaching really good. The idea about keeping
vibrato from being automatic was very useful. I need to be much more aware of my vibrato use. Pieter was fantastic. I could not intuitively follow his
expression. I need to know the piece better, perhaps. Great video! Amusing french hornist. I did not take to the conductor. Again, my own limitation and lack
of experience with this piece.

Isserlis seems like a really nice person. My ideal - Feuermann -played differently, but the difference is not as extreme as I used to think.
There should be more videos of Isserlis on youtube. That he does his own thing is good. I also love to look at the Feuermann Strad.

Utter embarrassment. How many cello newbies have had this experience? Five years ago, when I first discovered this instrument, the first CD I purchased was
Wispelway playing the Rococo Variations (mainly because my teacher was performing them at that point). I now find that I judge all performances of this piece
on this first love. Tonight, driving home, I tuned into our local NPR station in the middle of the Variations...and kept thinking...I wonder who's playing
this?...This isn't the way it's supposed to be....Not good at all.
And when I got home and checked the performer... Rostropovich himself. As I said, utter embarrassment. But it made me wonder, how many of us beginners and amateurs, influenced by an early experienced performance, judge all others in that light? Kathleen |

I think that's all happend to us at one point or another! Actually, I've had the opposite experience: after watching Nigel Kennedy's Vivaldi on
Youtube (foot-stomping and all), I had this judgement of him playing early baroque music without taste, but on the radio I heard an incredible A minor Bach
concerto and at the end I found out it was Kennedy himself! It was a good thing... I think. Hahaha

Kathleen, you are so right! I do that with a lot of music -piano, for instance. I htink we need a base line and something to begin to form opinions and learn
to discern,. Probably not just newbies, either. I compare all cello playing with my teacher's playing! He is my standard. Fortunately, he is a fabulous
player! I sometimes wonder what would have happened if I'd landed with a different teacher. I am very fortunate. I had that experience with Casals'
Bach suites. They were so different then my other recordings, that I wanted to instantly decide they were inferior. Of course, I knew that was my own silly
shortdightedness, so I kept listening, and I got his book where he talks about the suites, and I asked my teacher about various aspects. So now I adore them. I
still prefer Slava's suites, but not because they are better, but because, hm, I dunno, speaks to me more.

I saw Isserlis do a master class last October, and it was AMAZING to see the man at work. Every sound that came from his cello when he demonstrated was pure
beauty. Remarkable instrument too!
