Hi everybody smile.gif

I'm currently starting to study thumb position.

What I've noticed is that most players tend to place the thumb in both A and D string even if they are only playing on the A string. Why is that? On the other hand, if I'm only playing a phrase in the A string, is it wrong if I only place my thumb in the A string? It seems easier for me.

Thanks a lot
Paul Tortelier in his method HOW I PLAY HOW I TEACH advocates for the complementary placement of the thumb just in the A string. That makes possible an intensive use of the finger 4 in the thumb position.
