I'm also a progrssing student and bought an electric cello for when I travel on business. While it is better than nothing, it's not really much of a substitute. It doesn't 'ring' like my cello to tell me I'm bowing right, etc and it feels totally different too. It's ok for practising my vibrato motion or other left hand stuff but not much else. I read someone once describing an electric cello as a different instrument entirely to an acoustic cello. That resonates with my experience, no pun intended ;-)
