My teacher has a book of studies, a german name starting with F .... ? Edited - Feulliard, I should get that, right? And should I get some Popper? Also getting a couple of editions of Bach, the Vandersall and maybe the Fournier. I think. Also treating myself to Starker's autobiography. I've got the Piati books one and two, and the Cello technical workbook from AMEB (all the scales and stuff). thanks!

Reticent CelloChatter Posts: 1419 05/13/09 22:17:21 Administrator	This may be a bit off-topic, but I feel like people should spend more time trying to understand how to play the cello rather than seeking out etude books. I understand why etudes are written and why they are assigned, and I have woodshedded many of the ones mentioned myself, but perhaps they should be thought of as supplementary teaching material rather than as teachers themselves that will somehow unlock the secrets of cello playing merely by working on them. I'm thinking attention to first principles may be more productive, which is something a good teacher can help with, even through work in Suzuki Book 1 pieces.

It's the lack of musicality that bothers me with many of the etudes, so that I feel that I've put all this effort into learning something that is not beautiful and I would never pick up and just play. There are some of Lee's etudes and many of Matz's that I really like (and I've never been assigned any of Popper's which folks here speak highly of), but others I've been assigned are just not inspiring. I guess I wish that etudes, if they are important, were paired more often with particular pieces of music, so that the skills being worked on had a direct musical purpose. I think I'm agreeing with Tim's plea for learning first principles. My one cent....

Active CelloChatter Posts: 355 05/14/09 20:33:48 Active CelloChatter	My teacher said he won't make me do Fuilliard... he said Bach is fine, but we have to approach it the right way. No glossing over bad intonation. I've to play each phrase frontwards and backwards, using different bowings - four to a bow, two to a bow, hook stroke, pizz etc. So rather than a vast volume of studies, it's about really focussed attention on making every note perfect and beautiful. I did borrow his "Intermediate Etudes in the Positions" by Francis Grant which has stuff by Schroder, Dotzaur, Kummer, Lee et al. - it looks reasonably musical.

Reticent CelloChatter Posts: 512 05/18/09 09:21:28 Supporting CelloChatter	This is probably beyond where you're at, but Popper's "15 Easy Studies, Preparatory to Studies Opus 76 & 73" is very musical. Feuillard Daily Exercise 34 is something I've been working on for months, as you can adapt it to fit repetoire you're working on. Endless possibilities.... I also like Sevcik's Changing the Positions, Opus 8, edited by Orlando Cole.
